The Yoga Deck

The Yoga DeckIf you’re new to Yoga and still unfamiliar with many poses, or find little time to fit in a Yoga class, consider a Yoga Deck. The original Yoga Deck is a deck of cards, containing 50 poses and meditations. Simply select a few cards – try 2 or 12, whatever you think you can fit in.

The Yoga Deck has a Hatha Yoga focus. Hatha Yoga strives to balance mind, body and spirit through a combination of Asanas (poses) Pranayama (Breathing) and Dhyana (meditation).

The front of each card features an illustration of the pose. The back describes how to do the pose and lists the benefits.

The Yoga Deck LocustFor example, the HALF LOCUST card has a drawing on the front showing the pose, and the backĀ  says:

  • Lie face down, chin on floor, arms alongside your body, plams down
  • Point your toes; inhale and raise one leg. Focus on stretching, not lifting. Keep your leg straight.
  • Hold your breath for a count of 5. Slowly lower your leg for a count of 5.
  • etc…

  • Tones and strengthens the lower back, buttocks and back of thighs
  • Helps relieve lower back and posture problems
  • Energizes the nervous system
  • Improves circulation

The Yoga Deck reminds users that some people are naturally flexible, some are stronger than others. Yoga is not about goal orientation, it’s about listening to your body and breathing.

The Yoga Deck’s creator, Olivia H. Miller, has been a student of yoga for 25 years. We asked Olivia where her favorite place to do yoga was and she said, “Truth be told for me any place is great. But last fall I attended a yoga retreat at Race Point Lighthouse in Provincetown, MA, and WOW, it was spectacular. Provincetown is like being at the end of the world (in a good way!) and the slow rhythm of the ocean, the endless sky, the ‘let it all go’ vibe coupled with yoga was pretty special.”

Through her parent company, OHMWorks, Olivia offers wellness decks, books and workshops. Other products in her line include:

  • The Yoga Deck II
  • The Stretch Deck to promote flexibility and prevent injury
  • The Prenatal Yoga deck designed for moms-to-be
  • The Chakra Deck to introduce the 7 major chakras
  • The Feng Shui Deck for a harmonious environment
  • The Fitness Ball Deck – this is next on my list! Numerous exercises to help increase core body strength.
  • The Healthy Back Deck – stop and sit up straight, now…
  • And the Essential Yoga 240-page reference book of over 100 hatha yoga poses (also avail in Spanish).
