2011 Swimwear Trends

I just got back from a quick weekend in Key West, Florida. A winter beach getaway requires you to shed those cozy layers and focus on different essentials – the perfect swimsuit and cruisewear or accessories. Cyla Weiner, fashion industry expert and owner of Sylene of Washington (www.SyleneDC.com) has watched women try on swimwear for 35 years. “Regardless of a woman’s physical appearance, I have never met a woman who enjoys shopping for a swimsuit,” she says.

“Two things that are consistent is that women hate shopping for swimsuits and women always scrutinize their own bodies, whether they are a size 2 or a size 16.”

Swimsuit designers are trying to help by creating swimwear with different body types in mind. “Just as shapewear is a woman’s secret wardrobe weapon, Spanx continues to ride this wave with its great swimsuits, especially its tankinis with a choice of a high waisted bottom,” Cyla adds.

Cyla says the perfect suit for your figure does exist. She has outlined a few key body type issues and trends to help you find the suit that will make you feel and look fabulous:

Full & Small Busts:

For the full bust, Sylene of Washington is bringing back Aerin Rose suits. Their bikinis, tankinis and one-piece suits are sized for D, DD, E (DDD), and F cups. Tara Ginna makes suits up to a G cup with many variations on bottoms.

At Intimate Guide, we love the swimwear line from Freya for full busts. They come in a multitude of cup sizes, prints, styles and are CUTE! Pictured here is the Freya Pier Soft Plunge Tankini. This darling swim top features a fun floral print and empire waist styling with an elastic drawstring to cover any tummy issues beautifully. Foam-lined, 2-section, wireless cups rise above the plunge front to enhance cleavage. Hidden hook and eye bra closure in back for your perfect fit. The elastic drawstring and shoulder straps are made of contrast-color, polka dot fabric. Shoulder straps adjust in back with metal hardware. Matching polka dot brief, fold-top brief and skirted brief are available as bottoms. A bandeau Bikini Top with hidden underwire up to size G, underwire bikini top, Underwired Halter Bikini Top in red or green up to size GG, and ruffled skirt complete the line.

A new line that Sylene of Washington has booked is called A.Che They are great for the small busted gal who needs a little help. In particular, there is one top that Cyla plans on offering that will increase your bust size up to two sizes!

Large Thighs and Hips:

“We are bringing in many options in tankinis and bikini tops that have a skirted bottom,” Cyla says, “as this is a very flattering look for that body area.”

Color Trends:

Believe it or not, this year look for black with different shades of navy in all lines. Many combinations of black with navy have emerged creating a very sophisticated and fresh look. Animal prints are HOT: snake skin print in browns, blacks and greys and leopard prints in browns and newer versions in black with grey. “We love animal prints and have a fabulous monokini coming in from Melissa Odabash,” Cyla says. Prints are everywhere, with tribal prints and paisleys, but if you like a solid colored swimsuit consider spruce or forest green. We saw it in the Eres line and Karla Colletto‘s line too.

Cover Ups & Accessories:

Cyla says she is carrying fabulous cover-ups and caftans from Cool Change, Tommy Bahama, Shan and Melissa Odabash. “We fell in love with the Melissa Odabash Panama hat in a natural color,” Cyla adds.
