Pajamaphobia
Posted by Jeff on Jan 11th, 2007
I vividly remember a Saturday morning when I was about 12 years old. My parents were out of town and I was leisurely watching cartoons with my grandparents. I was relaxed. Life was good. Somewhere in the middle of the Smurfs, my uncle showed up on the doorstep.
Suddenly, I was vey self-conscious about my pajamas. I bolted to my room and shut the door. I don’t know why I didn’t lock the door, but moments later my uncle burst into the room. Laughing, he pointed at my pajamas and said something along the lines of, “Look at that little baby in his pajamas!”
In retrospect, I know that my uncle walked in the door, inquired about why I ran out of the room, and my truly compassionate grandmother said “Oh, he’s hiding in his room. He’s embarrassed about his pajamasâ€. That had to be irresistible to my uncle, and that’s what ultimately led to me cowering in the corner, praying he would just go home.
On that very day, I threw my pajamas in the garbage and refused to wear them for the next 18 years. I’m sure I’m not the only guy who grew out of pajamas and never really grew back into them, thinking that it’s just not manly.Â
This summer, I was invited to a “Hef†style pajama party, so I was forced to deal with my pajama anxiety. I bought a cheapo pair of cotton pajama pants at Target and put them on for the party, figuring I’d wear them once and never wear them again. Something happened that night. I liked the way they felt. They were loose fitting, 100% cotton, and button fly with a draw string. I can’t find them anymore, but they’re similar to the Calvin Klein Woven Lounge Pant Sleepwear. They were downright comfortable.
Now, I wear them all the time. Sure, the Smurfs aren’t on anymore, but they’ll do just fine for watching football on a Sunday. They’re a great replacement for the beat up sweatpants I used to wear on Sundays. I’ll go so far as to say they make me feel damned sexy. I’ll even confess I typically go shirtless and commando while wearing them. Suffice it to say, I’m hooked. So, I’ve decided not to be shy anymore. I’m resolving to explore my pajama options this year, and I’d love to hear your comments.Â
Ladies, do you like your man in PJ’s? Men, are you afraid to wear them?       Â
