On August 26, the coordination team of annual fundraiser Boobalicious – The Pink Playground (www.boobalicious.ca) partnered with flash mob organizers, Improv In Toronto, to bring awareness to the fight against breast cancer.
Made popular about 10 years ago, flash mobs are when a large group of people assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, and then just as quickly disperse and go about their days.
The partnership was based on a unified mission of Torontonians to educate, celebrate and activate in a unique way. Most importantly, attention would be drawn to a disease that plagues thousands of women (and men) in Canada and affects millions more around the world — breast cancer. As Yonge-Dundas Square would play host to an annual event, Women’s Day in the Courtyard, the organizing committee of Boobalicious saw an opportunity to communicate directly with their primary target market.
Assembling at Nathan Phillips Square in the early afternoon, 50 participants donning pink bras or white Boobalicious.ca t-shirts with printed pink bras, took to the streets carrying “BREAST CANCER” signs and distributing promotional cards.
As the group made its way through the Eaton Center to Dundas Square, the stir began with whispers, amused chuckles, cheers of encouragement, and people wanting to take photos with the group. At Dundas Square itself, the exposure was fantastic — and as the group spread from corner to corner, there was no chance this mob in pink bras would not be seen or heard. The promotion even caught the eye of the event’s entertainment sponsor, CHUM FM, who gave a nod to the pink bra wearers and their cause on-air.
After a photo op and distributing gift bags to various vendors, the group marched down Queen Street to Much Music, where they quietly dispersed as quickly as they formed.
The use of pink bras in this movement was a no-brainer as they were not only a connect to the cause, but directly tied into the Boobalicious theme of Pink Playground, a edgy, salacious carnival for the senses in support of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer and Keep-A-Breast Foundation.
