Getting the same bra look for less
Posted by Rachel on Oct 3rd, 2007
NBC’s Today Show featured Cindy Johnson, a lingerie expert and owner of SOL store of lingerie. She talked about fixing bra flaws for different age groups and the latest in booby technology.
Most of her fixes would work across the age-map, but for this show each error was separated for women in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s.
Why pay more for the same solution? We’ll show you how to get their look for less!
Women in their 20s
The first model, in her 20s, had not been properly measured and had the wrong size bra. Just because it fits doesn’t mean it fits well! The right fitting bra will change frumpy to fabulous in minutes — just get fitted.
Her other problem was that she was wearing a tank top with ugly bra straps sticking out. She was given the “fix” of a properly fitting bra that had pretty daisy straps, so what peeked out was still pretty.
Their recommendation: Avero by Marie Jo, $98.
Our Cheaper option: Playtex Thank Goodness It Fits Front Close with Flex Fit Back, under $15.
I have this bra, and it is the only wire-free bra I trust. The lightly padded cups provide shaping and the microfiber is smooth under t-shirts. It has a plunge front, so it can also be worn with low-cut tops. What you can’t see in the photo are the pretty rhinestones on the front closure.
Women in their 30sThe woman in her 30s had the problem of not switching out from her nursing bras after having her baby. She was no longer nursing, but still had an infant. If you’re in a similar situation, this is the perfect time to go get sized. You have had a weight change, a breast size yo-yo year, and you’ll need a few new bras. They suggested some pretty colors or lacy options to feel fabulous while you figure out your figure.
Their recommendation: Shiro by L’aventure, $99
Our cheaper option: For everyday - Barely There Invisible Look™ Underwire Bra, $22-30.This T-shirt bra has flexible foam cups that will provide support while hiding nursing pads if you are still concerned about leaking. And great for new moms: it’s tagless and the straps are adjustable from the front. BONUS: this bra is also convertible to criss-cross.
For ultra feminine - The Myrtle plunge bra (shown here) features floral embroidery and a bow at the center gore, $68.
Women in their 40sFor the woman in her 40’s they spoke about the newfound confidence to wear a fabulous dress or top that shows more skin, but not knowing what to wear under it. The model had a low cut dress with spaghetti straps, that did not allow enough fabric for even a plunge strapless bra. She had no bra so her boobs were drooping and unsupported, but she could have been foxy!
The answer to this dilemma is to use tape in front to provide lift, a double sided tape on the dress to keep it in place while you move, and nipple concealers if you are afraid you’ll show too much through the dress.Their recommendation: buy 3 products…
Breast Lift: Bring It Up Tapes, $26
Double sided tape: Flash Tape, $7
Nipple concealers: DIMRS, $32
Our cheaper solution - just by one package: Fashion Forms Tape & Shape Solutions $9.
Women in their 50sThe final problem/solution model was a woman in her 50s wearing white slacks with a white halter top. Her first problem - white undergarments under white clothes. Always wear panties and bras that match your skin tone when wearing white! Her second problem - VPL (the dreaded Visible Panty Line!) Third, she opted for no bra under her backless halter, instead of a strapless, convertible or halter bra.
Their solution: bra - Lejaby Nuage, $72. Thong - Hanky Panky, $18.
Our cheaper option: For enhancement - Lily of France Sleek X-Bra from Bare Necessities $30 (Get it in nude, though - not the white shown here).or for a more natural look - Wacoal Perfect Contour Convertible No Wire Bra converts to criss-cross, close set and halter, $40.
We at Intimate Guide do love the Hanky Panky thong, but many of their styles are lacy and would show through white pants. I suggest the Calvin Klein Naked Thong Panty for a $16 seamless, tagless option.
